Fluoride adsorption studies of montmorillonite clay
نویسندگان
چکیده
Batch adsorption studies were conducted to determine the effects of contact time and temperature on fluoride removal by montmorillonite clay at neutral pH. The adsorption of fluoride was studied at four different temperatures, viz. 30, 40, 50 and 60°C. The kinetics of adsorption as well as adsorption isotherms at different temperatures were studied. Adsorption obeyed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The percentage of fluoride removed increased with time and reached an optimum level at 50 min. The material with particle size of 75 microns registered maximum percentage of fluoride adsorption, compared to the other particle sizes. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption of fluoride by montmorillonite is an endothermic process, showing increase in sorption at higher temperature. The negative values of ΔG° indicate the spontaneity of the sorption process. Adsorption takes place on the surface as well as through intraparticle diffusion pattern of the adsorbent material. SEM studies revealed the morphological characteristics of the untreated sorbents as well as the changes in the treated sorbents. X-ray diffraction studies also confirmed the deposition of fluoride on the surface of the clay material. FTIR studies showed the involvement of hydroxyl group present on the surface in the adsorption interaction.

Bernal suggested that clays might have played a significant role in primitive earth through the process of concentration and adsorption of the biologically formed biomonomers and thus protecting them against hydrolytic fission.Adsorption of adenine was studied in presence of montmorillonite clay with or without cations Ca+,Cu+,Mg+.Studies carried out have shown that adsorption of adenine was de...
متن کاملEffect of proteins on reovirus adsorption to clay minerals.
Organic matter in sewage, soil, and aquatic systems may enhance or inhibit the infectivity of viruses associated with particulates (e.g., clay minerals, sediments). The purpose of this investigation was to identify the mechanisms whereby organic matter, in the form of defined proteins, affects the adsorption of reovirus to the clay minerals kaolinite and montmorillonite and its subsequent infec...
متن کاملAdsorption of Alkylphosphoric Acid on Kaolinite and Smectite in Water-decane
Abstraet--Bis-ethyl 2-hexylphosphoric acid (di-2 EHPA) dissolved in decane is chemisorbed on kaolinite and montmorillonite dispersed in an acidic aqueous solution. The adsorption results in the formation of complexes with the surface cations of the clays. The adsorption isotherms are of the Langmuir type and reveal a limiting value of adsorption on H+-kaolinite of 12.2 mg/g, comparable to that ...
